Maurice Ravel

Maurice Ravel was a French composer and pianist. He lived close to the border of Spain, and his mother was from the Basque region of Spain. He grew up hearing many Spanish folk songs his mother would sing. He began piano lessons when he was 6. He attended a very competitive school in Paris, then went on to join a group of other musicians called the “Apaches” which included the composer Igor Stravinsky. Ravel wrote many ballets and instrumental pieces that became a big hit. You can hear the Spanish influences in Balero, one of his most famous pieces.
