Welcome to Music Class, 5th Graders!
Last year you learned to read the pitches of the extended pentatonic scale – low sol, low la, do re mi sol la high do’ on the staff. You also explored previous rhythms: ta the quarter note, ti-ti the eighth notes, quarter rest, tikatika, 16th notes, half note, whole note, syncopation, ti-tika and tika-ti and learned new rhythms tahm-ti and ti-tahm as well as the dotted half note and how to read rhythms in meter of 3. You played various classroom instruments, learned to play the recorder, sang songs, played games and performed folk dances. You also created some of your own music using the pitches and rhythms that you learned throughout the year. You used more in depth music terminology to describe music and applied those concepts to compositions. You have become impressive musicians already. Your musical journey will take you to new places this year as we expand on what we know with more rhythms and pitches, new musical vocabulary and many new games, dances and songs. I can’t wait to see you again and begin making music!
